Abstract

Ozone is a molecule of major importance in the atmosphere. Both the spectroscopy and reactivity are of considerable interest. Vibrational excitation of the ground state will considerably affect both the ultraviolet absorption and the chemical reactivity of the molecule. We have used resonance Raman scattering to observe many vibrational bands up to and even above the thermo-chemically determined dissociation limit1 of 8880 cm−1. Such accurate band origin frequencies and correct assignments are essential to determining a correct potential energy surface.
