Determination of the energy of the primary electron acceptor - a direct proof for stepwise electron transfer in primary photosynthesis

Abstract

The mechanism of the primary photosynthetic reaction in bacterial reaction centers (RC) is currently the subject of intense and controverse discussions. In detail there are three major lines for the description of the primary reaction: (i) In the stepwise electron transfer (ET) model the electron travels within 3 ps from the special pair (P) to the neighbouring accessory bacteriochlorophyll (B), from there within 0.9 ps to the bacteriopheophytin (H) and subsequently within 200 ps to the quinone (Q). (ii) In the superexchange model the electron is transferred in one step directly from the special pair to the bacteriopheophytin Hand the bacteriochlorophyll Bis not a real electron carrier. (iii) In the adiabatic model the transfer motion is coherent and non-exponential kinetics are expected.
