OBSERVATION OF REDUCED INTERBAND ABSORPTION IN SEMICONDUCTOR QUANTUM WELLS

Abstract

Reduced interband absorptions in undoped semiconductor quantum wells arising from intersubband coupling has been predicted for excitonic and continuum QW transitions1,2, analogous to similar behavior in atomic systems3. Excitonic optical Stark effects have been studied in quantum wells4,5 showing low temperature modulation of excitonic absorption attributed to mixed excitonic-continuum coupling. However, our room temperature results show a distinct polarization dependency and gives both blue and red spectral shifts, supporting a primarily intersubband coupling mechanism.
