Abstract

Beyond the classical scheme of paranitroaniline-type 1-D charge transfer molecules for quadratic nonlinear optics (NLO), a more general family of multipolar nonlinear molecules and materials has been recently proposed.1 2-D and 3-D octupolar structures, which have been introduced on the basis of group theoretical and quantum mechanical arguments, open new perspectives in molecular and material engineering for quadratic NLO. High ß values and an improved transparency can be expected as compared to the corresponding dipolar structures.2
