Spin coupling in III-V quantum wells

Abstract

We first describe a series of experiments using cw polarized luminescence and excitation spectroscopy aimed at determining the magnetic g-factors of electrons and holes and their exchange interaction in excitons in type-1 quantum well samples. The measurements have been made at low temperatures in quantum wells of widths between 2 and 20 nm. These quantities cannot be obtained by optically detected electron spin resonance because the lifetimes are too short m such samples. Consequently, the g-factors were obtained by using the Hanle effect in p-type wells and excitonic Zeeman splitting in intrinsic wells, whereas the exchange interaction was obtained from level-crossing signals in the total exciton luminescence as a function of magnetic field.
