Abstract
Several research groups have demon-strated high-Q optical modes in quartz microspheres.1 These are called "whispering- gallery modes" (WGMs) because of their similarity to acoustic resonances in large auditoriums. In such modes light circulates in a thin annulus just inside the equatorial surface of the sphere, with an external (evanescent) field extending just beyond the surface. Here we consider the interaction of atoms with this external field.
