Abstract

Under certain conditions salts of pseudo-isocyanine (PIC) dye molecules form linear aggregates (J aggregates) in which Frenkel excitons are delocalized over the entire aggregate molecules by intermolecular interactions, Large optical nonlinearities are expected from the large oscillator strength of the delocalized Frenkel exciton. We have reported that Frenkel excitons in PIC-Br J aggregates have large coherence length over a thousand molecules and show an extraordinary large third-order susceptibility in degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) and absorption saturation (AS) measured by nanosecond pulses at 77 K.1
