Abstract
Consider an optical communication scheme in which the information is encoded in the phases of single-mode pulses of light. To operate near the quantum limit requires a) preparation of states with well-defined quantum phase b) accurate estimation of the phase of such states from a single measurement. In this work we are concerned with the second requirement.
