Formation and dynamics of Ag-He2 exciplex in liquid helium

Abstract

Although the spectroscopic study of neutral atoms in liquid helium has made a remarkable progress in recent days [1], there still remain a number of phenomena for which no clear interpretation has been given. One of them is the absence of laser induced fluorescence (LIF) from light alkali atoms (Li, Na, K) [2]. Also for Rb and Cs, the D2 lines are very weak or even missing in LIF. Recently Dupont-Roc [3] has suggested that the attractive interaction between He and one valence electron atom in its P state can attract He atoms to form exciplex, thus largely reducing the energy.
