Dynamics of condensing polaritons

Abstract

We study cooperative phenomena in a population of semiconductor polaritons that is maintained far from thermal equilibrium. This cooperation is used to generate a coherent population of excitons and photons. Because of the non-equilibrium nature of this system, the phase-transition acquires several properties reminiscent of laser threshold [1,2]. However, this bosonic system can exhibit threshold and coherent light emission without the benefits of either population inversion or photon stimulated emission.
