Quantum dynamics and noise in atom optics

Abstract

Although schemes have been proposed there have been no experimental realization of continuous measurement in atom optics. We study the effect of phase noise on laser cooled atoms undergoing dynamic localization and the effect of intensity noise on atoms reflected from a temporally modulated evanescent wave. Depending on the type of noise the master equation also describes a continuous measurement of momentum or position. Hence it is possible to test the effect of measurement in quantum chaos by tailoring the noise source.
