Abstract
The search for improved solid-state light emitters has concentrated in the past on improving materials quality, and extending spectral ranges. The main physical design concept which has led to improved performance is the reduction in electronic phase space, culminating in low-dimensional structures with the highly successful quantum well and the more arduous quantum wires and quantum dots, with improved properties still to be demonstrated.
