Picosecond smoothing of laser beams with interaction tested by recent high gain experiments

Abstract

Smoothing of laser beams using a random phase plate and or a reduced coherence of the radiation is well known [ 1 ] and was introduced with the aim to suppress filamentation of the laser beam when interacting with dielectric responding materials. Since the 20 picosecond stochastic pulsation of the interaction was measured [2] it was clarified numerically [3] that this is due to the laser self generated density ripple which provides an ideal Brillouin back scattering even if the ripple is very weak. This can be seen from the pulsating interaction of recent experiments where the filamentation is strong only with large roster random phase plates and the pulsation creates structures which are pe pendicular to the filaments.
