Terabit communications systems: modelling the physical limits

Abstract

As new technologies are developed to achieve ever increasing bit rates, ultrafast communications systems are pushed closer to limits imposed by the fundamental physics of optical fibres, rather than by technological or engineering problems. The quantum model of the propagation of radiation in optical fibres presented here reveals that terabit communications may be limited by initial vacuum fluctuations.
