Abstract
The manipulation of atoms with laser light has been the subject of a great deal of interst over the last few years specifically with respect to the cooling and trapping of atoms. In the work presented here we shall present another application of this force to the determination of atomic state. That the photon force is dependent on the state of the atom before entering the photon field is well known, however little work to date has been done in determining the exact nature of this force. Recent theory [1,2] has shown that, under certain conditions, the initial state of an ensemble of atoms can be determined by measuring the momentum imparted from a near resonant laser beam.
