Abstract

Molecular oxygen plays an important role in the atmosphere as both an absorber of ultraviolet radiation, and a producer of atomic oxygen (a precursor to ozone formation). Predissociation in the Schumann-Runge bands of 02 (175-205nm) is an important source of atomic oxygen. A thorough knowledge of atomic oxygen production rates, through accurate measurements of the absorption line widths and strengths, [1,2] is essential for the calculation of atmospheric parameters, such as ozone concentrations.
