Laser spectroscopy in collisions of copper atoms with electrons

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The electron impact cross sections of the states in copper which are involved in the operation of copper vapour laser are important parameters for models of such lasers. A stepwise excitation technique has been used to measure the electron impact integrated cross section for the excitation of the metastable 3D state in copper from the ground state in the 1.6 - 4.8 eV energy range. In these experiments a beam of electrons of known energy excites a beam of copper atoms.
