Abstract
Nonuniform linear gratings support characteristic field solutions referred to here as resonance modes. These resonance modes are analogous to the waveguide modes of graded index waveguides. A new formalism is presented which represents the fields in the grating, the spectral response of the grating (eg the reflectance and transmittance) and also the structure of the grating itself in terms of these resonance modes and their associated resonant frequencies.
