Large bore copper HyBrID laser excited by magnetically compressed pulses

Abstract

We have successfully operated an 8 cm diameter copper HyBrID[1,2] laser. The laser was excited by a magnetic compression circuit. The geometry and excitation circuit are similar to those of our large bore elemental copper laser[3]. The superior characteristics of a copper HyBrID laser over the elemental copper laser were attributed to the differences in physical and electrical parameters. Since those parameters were extensively studied in our conventional copper laser, in terms of plasma parameters,[4] impedance of the plasma[5] and penetration of the electric field,[6] an appropriate comparison is possible. The difference in these parameters between the two lasers will be presented and discussed.
