Abstract
Infrared emission spectra have been obtained for compositions consisting of boron and alkali metal nitrates. The emission was monitored over the 5000 cm-1 (2 μm) to 1250 cm-1 (8 μm) wave length range using a BOMEM Fourier transform emission spectrometer. The most notable feature in the emission spectrum was a structured broad emission peak centred at about 2000 cm-1 (5 μm). The identity of the boron oxidation products contributing to this emission has never before been clarified, but several different products are likely to contribute. On the basis of the correspondence between the wavelengths observed for emission fine structure, and literature data obtained from absorption measurements, the contributing products have now been identified.
