Generation of energetic picosecond optical pulses from Nd:doped crystal lasers

Abstract

Wide bandwidth laser materials such as Ti:sapphire and Cr:Li:SAF, etc. have led to a revolution in ultra-short pulse laser technology. Nevertheless Ti:sapphire systems are generally costly and complex because ofa fundamental property of the laser material - its short upper laser level lifetime - which precludes flashlanp or laser diode pumping.
