Abstract
Crystals whose nonlinear susceptibility, χ(2), is modulated periodically in space although difficult to make are very rewarding [I). In fact, the modulation of the nonlinearity can phase match two counterpropagating beams so that it is possible to have second harmonic generation or optical parametric amplification in a counterpropagating geometry.
