Abstract
In 1946, Purcell1 first noticed that the spontaneous emission rate of an atom is not only determined by the electronic wave functions of the atomic states involves but also by the optical density of states and the electromagnetic field strength of the optical modes at the position of the atom. Since then, this subject has received much attention, both from theoretical and experimental points of view. Most of the investigations focused on altering the density of the states of the light field.
