Abstract

We study the effect of second-harmonic generation for femtosecond optical pulses in the context of the vector Maxwell equations in one dimension. Using an instantaneous model for the nonlinear interaction of the electromagnetic field with a dielectric, we observe, surprisingly, the generation of unipolar second-harmonic signals with many optical cycles.
