Atomic-beam deflection by coherent momentum transfer and the determination of weak magnetic fields

Abstract

We demonstrate the potential of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) for coherent momentum transfer by showing the quantum-state-preserving deflection of an atomic Ne* beam. The spatial displacement of the deflected beam (Fig. 1) exceeds the width of the collimated atomic beam. Since only one isotope interacts with the radiation, the two isotopes of mass 20 and 22 are fully separated.
