Abstract
Understanding the molecular properties of liquid water, and in particular, the connection between the molecular (microscopic) and macroscopic properties of water is, and has for a long time been an important challenge in physical chemistry. Using femtosecond laser techniques many important new observations have been reported over the last 20 years, and in connection with the theoretical advances, in particular molecular dynamics simulations, the general understanding of liquid water has improved considerably. In this talk we will describe a series of experiments where the ultrafast dynamics of liquid water was probed directly or indirectly using different solutes.
