Spatiotemporal instabilities induced by spatial non uniformities in a nematic liquid cristal with optical feedback

Abstract

A nematic liquid cristal, used as a non linear Kerr medium, exhibits spatiotemporal structures when inserted into an optical feedback loop and pumped by a laser [1]. At instability threshold hexagons appear for large aspect ratio (Fig. 1). However, outside these peculiar conditions complex dynamics take place.
