Single atom capturing effect by a single distant mirror

Abstract

We demonstrate experimentally that a single, trapped, laser-excited barium ion, whose surrounding electromagnetic vacuum field and radiation reaction field is modified by a distant mirror, experiences forces which notably change its trapping conditions.
