Abstract

Upper bands of 2-D photonic crystals are shown to exhibit extreme anisotropy even near Gamma-point: (a) isofrequency contours are hyperbolic instead of circular; (b) direction-dependent angle between group and phase velocities. Novel beam splitters and mirrors are proposed.
