Origin of the Reaction of Probe Spectra on the Coupling Pump Laser Absorption

Abstract

In previous publications [1,2], we have explored the effect of the absorption of a moderately intense probe on the pump absorption expressed as a function of the probe detuning. Note that the pump is not detuned from resonance. No physical explanation was offered for the similarities or differences between the pump and probe spectra. Here we show that the effect of the probe spectrum on the pump absorption results from a probe-frequency-dependent modulation of the populations of the states involved in the transitions interacting with the radiation.
