Abstract

Crystalline optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators are a new tool for fundamental and applied optics. The CaF2 cavities may be fabricated with diameter as small as 100µm and Q factor as high as 6 × 1010 at wavelength of 1064nm using available grinding and polishing techniques. Crystalline cavities have Q factors higher than in any other WGM resonators1. Other transparent crystals, such as MgF2 and LiNbO3, may be used.
