Abstract

Cold Rydberg atoms present strong, long-range, dipole-dipole interactions which are appealing for applications in non-linear optics and quantum simulation, amongst others. Recently, there have been significant advances including the demonstration of quantum gates based on Rydberg excitations [1,2] and giant optical non-linearities [3] leading to the possibility of generating non-classical states of light [4-6]. The non-local character of this optical non-linearity within the blockade radius [7], could allow one to circumvent the difficulties in applying other (local) methods to quantum information processing [8,9].
