Abstract
It was recently demonstrated that various novel, ultrafast strong-field processes can take place in the field of few-cycle propagating surface plasmon wavepackets such as tunnelling (strong-field) photoemission even at low laser intensities or keV electron acceleration [1,2]. The (moderate, less than ×10) field enhancement at nano-sized, typically non-plasmonic metallic tips also resulted in a set of intriguing phenomena such as attosecond control of above threshold photoemission [3] and the quenching of electron quiver motion [4]. Since nanoscale electric fields can be efficiently enhanced (by factors of several hundreds) and tailored at plasmonic nanoparticles, we investigated ultrafast photoemission and electron acceleration from various plasmonic nanostructures by illuminating them with ultrashort laser pulses.
