Abstract
The emergence of asymmetric and terrorist threats as a prime focus of the U.S. military operations is placing high demands on Air Force reconnaissance, surveillance, and targeting systems. When placed within the context of a complex, urban landscape, a need arises for advanced electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensing techniques to deal with the combination of small, diverse, and elusive targets and broad area, complex, and highly structured regions of interest. The Air Force Research Laboratory is addressing these science and technology needs through a number of research projects developing advanced EO/IR sensing concepts including hyperspectral change detection, infrared wide area surveillance, and feature-aided target tracking in complex, culturally-cluttered areas.
