Abstract
This is a brief review of two studies of lattice stability in fs-laser heated Au nanofoils with absorbed fluences up to 0.25J/cm2 (corresponding absorbed energy density of 4.3MJ/kg). Disassembly of the heated sample is determined using time-resolved Frequency Domain Interferometry. The first study has led to the discovery of a superheated, high-energy-density, non-equilibrium solid phase. The second study has yielded the first assessment of the applicability of an EAM interatomic potential in the non-equilibrium Warm Dense Matter regime.
