Air waveguides generated by femtosecond filaments

Abstract

Femtosecond filaments deposit energy in gases, producing a significant hydrodynamic response. We harness this effect to generate an optical waveguide in air with a millisecond lifetime and use it to guide a delayed laser pulse.
