Abstract

We report field effect electro-absorption (EA) modulators made of a thin epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) film sandwiched in a silicon or plasmonic waveguide. The significant bias-induced reduction of the absorption of the ENZ film may promise nanoscale modulators.
