Abstract
Optical surface second harmonic generation (SHG) has been used in conjunction with conventional surface science techniques to investigate the Cu(110) surface and the Ag/Cu(110) interface under UHV conditions. Surface SHG is found to provide detailed information on the well-characterized, clean Cu(110) single-crystal surface. It is also shown to be a sensitive real-time probe of both the growth of uniform monolayer thick Ag layers and the nucleation and growth of three-dimensional Ag nano-clusters (<10 monolayers thick) on the Cu(110) substrate.
