Abstract

The task of a machine vision system is to produce a description of a three dimensional world suited for some application. The description is based on one or more images. Images are two dimensional distributions of brightness generated by an imaging device. The problem can be viewed as one of inversion: If we understand the projection process which creates images from the three dimensional world, we can hope to reverse this process to recover information about the world.
