Abstract
The National Society for the Prevention of Blindness has estimated that about two million Americans have severely impaired vision. Most of these individuals can read normal print if magnification and other viewing conditions are suitable. However, few general principles exist to guide the design or prescription of low-vision reading aids. This is because we don't know the stimulus conditions that are required for optimal reading by people having various types and degrees of vision loss, and we are unable to predict the best performance these people might achieve.
