Abstract

In our earlier studies we have shown that the sensitivity of the B-cone system may be selectively depressed as an early sign prior to the onset of diabetic retinopathy.1,2 Here we use a simple inexpensive clinical test, utilizing a 4 alternative forced choice method,3 to evaluate B-cone sensitivity in 47 diabetics with pre-proliferative and proliferative retinopathy. The test takes 3 to 4 minutes and includes measures designed to establish the specificity of the B-cone sensitivity loss and the role of changes in ocular media which might mimic B-cone sensitivity loss. This criterion free clinical test format appears to be a feasible approach to identifying early visual sensitivity loss.
