ERG b-Wave Implicit Time and b/a Wave Ratio as a Function of Intensity in Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

Abstract

The effectiveness of the electroretinogram (ERG) as an indicator of the eventual development of neovascular complication in central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) has been supported by several recent studies. Breton et al (1989) and Johnson et al (1988) report significant predictive power for the intensity-response curve fitting parameters Log K and Rmax, as well as for the b/a wave amplitude ratio and 30 Hz implicit time. Kaye and Harding (1988) found single flash b-wave implicit time to be the most predictive parameter of subsequent neovascular complication, but also found significant predictive power for b/a wave amplitude ratio and b-wave amplitude. Kaye and Harding further report that the predictive power of b-wave implicit time did not change with intensity at six stimulus intensity levels. Johnson et al also report that b-wave implicit time is an effective predictor of neovascular complication. The other two reports differ from that of Breton et al which did not find b-wave implicit time to have predictive power and deleted it from their analysis.
