PMD Fluctuation Driven by Temperature Changes in DCF

Abstract

We report on the polarization mode dispersion dynamics and Q value fluctuations of a link when the inline dispersion compensation modules (DCM) are exposed to variation in its surrounding temperature. We analyzed the link’s performance and impact with up to three DCMs under the same temperature fluctuations. Our results showed that a 40Gb/s signal could experience DGD fluctuation anywhere between 1.7ps and 7ps at rates probably greater than 1 Hz.
