Abstract

IEEE Committee 802.1 has initiated new work in the area of LAN / MAN security. These projects promise to yield LAN MAC layer security technology, which can be used as the basis for new Secure Ethernet Services. Such value added services will provider carriers with additional revenue opportunities. The goals of this paper are to summarize the relevant LAN security technology and associated standards status, define some potential network and service provider applications, and show how the requisite technology can be integrated into network elements.
