Abstract

This article describes families of Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithms, which are commonly used in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON). DBA algorithms control the uplink transmission from the Optical Network Units (ONUs) toward the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The flavors of DBA algorithms are analyzed with respect to supported services and transmission parameters. Correct selection and adjustment of the DBA algorithms by the carrier will enable the carrier to optimize the system to its own needs based on the actual usage model. It also will enable the carrier to maximize revenues and enhance customer experience.
