Increased System Penalties Resulting from the Combined Effect of PMD and Residual CD

Abstract

We measured the combined impact of polarization-mode-dispersion and chromatic dispersion for non-return-to-zero and return-to-zero formats. We found that for return-to-zero the measured combined penalty was more severe than the sum of the individual penalties.
