Abstract
Ethernet technology is widely spread in local area networks (LANs) due to its cost-effectiveness and plug-and-play capability. Recently, many carriers and service providers are rushing to provide Ethernet-Virtual Private Network (VPN) services in metro area networks (MANs). In such carrier and provider networks, scalability, reliability, controllability, and manageability are required for satisfying customer demands. Currently, two main packet-based switching approaches have been proposed for building cost-effective VPN solutions in MANs: Ethernet over Multi Protocol Label Switching (EoMPLS [1-4]) and Extended VLAN (Q-in-Q [8-11]). The advantages and drawbacks of each approach are as follows.
