Maintaining Availability in an Optical Backbone Network

Abstract

This paper proposes a way to calculate the availability of an optical backbone network and how to control and design availability of specific routes. The two parameters that the carrier can control are the architecture and the ‘Mean Time To Repair’ (MTTR). To achieve targeted MTTRs, Local Spares Warehouses (LSWs) are distributed throughout the network. This paper presents an innovative method for the optimal placement of LSWs and describes optimal spares storage and replacement policies.
