PMD Characterization of Installed Fiber Networks - Compromise Between Result Accuracy and Measurement Time

Abstract

FiberWork has conducted PMD field characterization in over 500,000km of installed fibers. Such extensive database has been used to derive the minimum measuring time required to provide acceptable PMD measurement accuracies. The analysis is presented in this paper and is done in terms of PMD levels and fiber plant types. Useful orientations for optimizing PMD field characterization and lower its costs while keeping acceptable results are discussed.
