Loss of Polarization Entanglement in Optical Fibers due to Polarization Mode Dispersion

Abstract

We perform quantum tomography measurements on polarization-entangled photon pairs traversing fibers with birefringence. We find that the entanglement disappears gradually if the birefringence affects only one photon of the pair. A theory supports our observations.
